Changes to CCNSG Safety Passport

From 1st April 2022, the ECITB / CCNSG will no longer allow or accept the 3-month grace period currently given to all CCNSG Safety Passport Cards.  Delegates will be required to renew their card no later than their card expiry date, otherwise a 2-day Basic Safety Passport course will need to be completed.

With a significant number of sites refusing to accept CCNSG cards that have gone past the official registered expiry date, the rule change will ensure consistency across the industry as a whole.

The official statement from the ECITB can be viewed below –

The CATCH award for excellence is a scheme for recognising when one of our employees really goes above and beyond. Yasmin Smith, Trainee Course Coordinator,  was nominated and then subsequently presented with the award this week.

Yasmin was nominated by colleague Jess Bocock and said “Yasmin has consistently taken on new challenges and responsibilities within her role since starting 7-8 months ago. In such a short space of time, she has achieved so much for the business. She has allowed the production levels to increase, staff members to take holidays with ease knowing their roles are covered with accuracy and has never complained about a job she has been asked to do. No challenge is too much for her and considering she didn’t have any administration experience.   She has a very positive impact on the team and always comes to work with a smile on her face!”

On receipt of her award, Yasmin commented, “I was really shocked to receive this; I wasn’t expecting it at all. I haven’t been here long, but I really love my job already and everyone I work with is so supportive. I am very grateful to receive this award and I am pleased people think I’m doing a good job”.

Congratulations Yasmin from all at CATCH!

I would like to take a moment to reflect on an unusual and remarkable year, on the back of what was a very difficult 2020.  When we first started to take notice of COVID-19 early in 2020, little did we know that almost 2-years later we would still be wearing masks and sanitising at every opportunity.  At CATCH we have continued to deliver our services throughout the pandemic and to date we have not relaxed our COVID protocols.  As I write this message it looks as if we were right to maintain our stance on COVID precautions as we are waiting to hear if yet another Christmas is to be curtailed with ‘Plan B’!

Despite the difficult times for everyone, I would like to focus on the huge number of positives for CATCH from the last year.  I hope you will forgive my indulgence as I know that many will have faced personal challenges, but I am so proud of what the CATCH team has delivered and  want to end the year on a positive note.

This year CATCH has supported the Humber Industrial Cluster Plan, the roadmap to net zero industrial emissions for the Humber region.  We have been working closely on the Plan with the Hull and East Yorkshire LEP and key industrial partners. Central to the Plan are 6 work packages that include a systems model of the region, technical studies, supply chain capability, skills and age profile audits, an understanding of the social dimension to decarbonisation, and finally pulling the Plan together into a cohesive strategy by March 2023.  You can sign up for cluster plan news and updates on the Humber Industrial Decarbonisation and Humber Hydrogen networks at (https://www.humberindustrialclusterplan.org/).  As we move into our second year we are investigating what is needed as a legacy project to the Plan to support the region and industry through to 2040 and beyond.

At CATCH we are also on our own journey to net-zero and have signed the SME Climate Hub Pledge.  This has led to a commitment to reach net-zero as a business by 2040 and we are currently working on benchmarking our own emissions and developing our own roadmap through Visibility Carbon.  https://www.carbonvisibility.com/

We have seen the completion of a project to deliver improvements to the site, including an exciting enhancement to the on-site process plant that makes CATCH unique.  This work has provided for increased capacity and capability including a state-of-the-art Honeywell control system and a new receipt/issue and storage capability.  The site improvement project was funded through a 3-way collaboration of the Humber LEP, CATCH and Reynolds Training Services, with Reynolds having the vision and providing the majority of the funding for the delivery of the plant expansion.  The partnership with Reynolds (https://reynoldstraining.com/) has led to the development of the National Centre for Process and Manufacturing concept (https://ncpm.uk/) based around the process plant.

Throughout the year CATCH has continued to deliver its traditional services with great success, including Membership events and networking, contractor competence audits (ConCom), office space, room hire and the campus of leading training providers on site.  Our own CATCH Skills capability has continued to go from strength to strength and has only been limited by the availability of facilities (the site is currently running at 91% utilisation), leading to developing thinking about a need for a new facility to provide additional capacity. Despite this, the team has delivered a high class training service with the constant challenge of COVID cancellations, postponements and social distancing measures – lots of new customers and projects make 2022 an exciting year ahead.

Finally, in July we were delighted to announce that CATCH was taking its greatest step forward since the site was opened in 2006 by becoming a registered apprentice provider in our own right.  This was a huge achievement by the team, and we currently have 19 apprentices on our books within various Science Manufacturing Technician (process operation) Standard pathways. Our vision is to expand the CATCH Apprenticeship provision so look out for more information as we look to establish ourselves in the region as a truly employer led apprenticeship provider.

We could not have achieved what we have this year without the support of our Member organisations, partners, and wider customer/stakeholder group.  We have an exciting vision at CATCH for our region, and with this incredible support we will be able to continue our exciting journey.

We have grown considerably as a team this year, both in terms of the size and capability. I have worked with some incredible people over the years, but I am continually amazed by the passion of the CATCH team for their work and their positive approach to the organisation.  I am genuinely humbled every day by our team and am proud of how they have adapted to every challenge.  The CATCH team has driven our business forward during an incredibly difficult time and I am so proud of what has been achieved together.

We would like to wish everyone a wonderful holiday and look forward to returning in the New Year to continue afresh on our journey.

Happy Christmas.

David

Strategy demonstrates Midlands ability to deliver, by 2041: • £10bn GVA to the Midlands and UK economy • 29% CO2 reduction against current levels • 167,000 new or safeguarded jobs

The Midlands is the manufacturing heartland of the UK, with unrivalled expertise and capacity to make and apply low carbon hydrogen technologies to deliver net zero. It is hydrogen technologies that have the power to connect hydrogen generators and end users – and it is the Midlands that has the power to make those technologies, for use in areas as diverse as transport, domestic heating and off grid power supplies.

Driven by industry and in partnership with the public sector and academia, the rapidly growing Hydrogen Technologies Valley in the Midlands continues to go from strength to strength: an ecosystem of innovation and infrastructure that enables hydrogen technologies to be developed, commercialised and industrialised, at scale. Launching today [14 Dec 2021], the pioneering Midlands Engine Hydrogen Technologies Strategy has been co-created by partners from right across the region to crystallise and champion the pivotal role the Midlands can play in low carbon hydrogen, to achieve government ambitions to expand the UK hydrogen economy and drive sustainable growth.

The Midlands Engine Hydrogen Technologies Strategy is part of the pan-regional partnership’s wider Ten Point Plan for Green Growth which is galvanising action for a cleaner, greener, better Midlands. Its publication represents a significant milestone in the region’s accelerated transition to net zero. Independent analysis demonstrates that mobilising to implement the ten actions set out in the strategy could deliver 167,000 new or safeguarded jobs, £10bn GVA to the Midlands and UK economy and 29% CO2 reduction against current levels in the next ten years – through these interventions alone.

The strategy also underlines the unparalleled regional unity the Midlands demonstrates around the green growth and the net zero agenda – with active leadership from industry partners including EDF Energy, JCB, Worcester Bosch and Intelligent Energy; input from academic institutions such as the University of Nottingham and Energy Research Accelerator; and clear political support from both government and opposition parties.

Key outcomes from the Hydrogen Technologies Strategy are already being accelerated, including Midlands Engine partners leading the H2GVMids consortium, preparing the ground for a green-hydrogen fuelled 44-tonne truck demonstration programme in the Midlands – a programme the region is perfectly located to lead, right at the heart of UK logistics. And beyond low carbon hydrogen, the Midlands Engine partnership is spearheading pan-regional action with a focus on green buildings, net zero transport, clean and smart energy, and crucial enablers including green innovation, the energy workforce and green finance.

Sir John Peace, Chairman of the Midlands Engine, said: “With bold ambition and real pace, the Midlands Engine partnership is taking the national lead to pioneer, commercialise and deliver the technologies that will unlock low carbon hydrogen opportunities. The Midlands is the UK’s manufacturing heartland and one of the most important national locations for hydrogen innovation and application, with a distinct blend of diverse manufacturing ingenuity and capability, world-leading commercial, industrial and academic innovation, and ideal geographic location.

“By championing the role and work of our partners in developing next-generation hydrogen technologies, the Midlands Engine Hydrogen Technologies Strategy identifies the unique leadership role the Midlands can and will play in delivering government low carbon hydrogen ambitions – for the good of our environment and our economy.”

Rachael Greenwood, Executive Director of the Midlands Engine, said: “Today marks a significant moment for the Midlands as we outline and evidence our region’s unrivalled leadership in the development and deployment of hydrogen technologies across a range of sectors. Co-authored by Midlands Engine partners from across our region, this Hydrogen Technologies Strategy highlights our region’s opportunity to generate over 85,000 jobs through the production, storage and supply of hydrogen, over 60,000 jobs through decarbonising HGVs and refuelling infrastructure, and almost 2,000 jobs when using hydrogen as an alternative aviation fuel – all with the potential to contribute £10bn GVA to the Midlands economy. Once again, our partners have demonstrated their position as experts in the delivery of the government’s ambitious decarbonisation plans, and the vision to level up across the UK through growth in sectors which are key to cutting emissions.”

Darren Jones MP, Chair of the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Select Committee, said: “Government should support industry to trial, scale up and demonstrate hydrogen technologies as an alternative to fossil fuels across our industry. The Midlands Engine Hydrogen Technologies Strategy provides a framework for this vision across the Midlands, highlighting regional opportunities for the use of hydrogen technologies and the benefits of so doing to the local economy, employment and skills opportunities, as well as the climate.”

DL-Meet-the-team-1-1280x721.png

I am the Lead Process Trainer for CATCH Apprenticeships. My role is to provide the lead on teaching and learning for CATCH apprenticeships. I ensure we create a variety of innovative teaching resources to equip apprentices with the knowledge, skills and behaviours to be successful in their job role.

Our delivery programme has been built by our employers, it is in every sense of the term – employer led. We have access to the Process Manufacturing Plant at West Yorkshire so we can safely train apprentices in a realistic working environment. We provide bespoke ‘added value’ training during our apprenticeship too. This is unique to CATCH. Employers choose training that matches their company needs for each apprentice. I enjoy being part of a journey. Seeing school and college leavers transform into responsible highly skilled technicians is the best feeling ever! As teaching is my passion, l love providing opportunities to share experiences and relating theorical knowledge in the classroom to a technical role in company.

We will keep listening and being responsive to employers and apprentices needs. We will build on our West Yorkshire school and college engagement programme thus creating a well prepped talent pool for employers to pick from. In 10 years I hope to be fulfilling our mission to make CATCH Apprenticeships Your route to success!
