The East Coast Cluster has been successful in securing track 1 status in the BEIS cluster sequencing programme along with North West Cluster HyNet, and the Scottish Cluster in reserve. The East Coast Cluster is a collaboration between Zero Carbon Humber, Net Zero Teesside and the Northern Endurance Partnership and aims to create and support an average of 25,000 jobs per year between 2023 and 2050, with approximately 41,000 jobs at the project’s peak in 2026. These skilled jobs in exciting new industries, including industrial carbon capture, low-carbon hydrogen production, negative emissions power, and power with carbon capture, can play an important part of levelling up in the UK.

David Talbot, CEO CATCH said “The Humber region has been at the forefront of the Government’s NetZero ambition, particularly in the last few years. The announcement cements that vision, as leading industrial emitters work together to propel the UK to a low carbon future. For the last 12 months CATCH has been working with the HEY Lep and 8 industry partners to produce a strategic roadmap that will provide confidence to the UK Government, encompassing how industrial emissions will change over time and provide the region’s projects and industry with a well-defined, optimal route to achieving true net-zero in 2040.  In addition to the work CATCH is currently undertaking on the Humber Industrial Cluster Plan, I am also committing CATCH to continue to support all the Humber’s exciting deployment projects, our Members, and local industry by providing a lasting legacy to The Humber Industrial Cluster Plan work through to 2040 and beyond.

Interconnection with hydrogen production facilities, salt cavern storage, and neighbouring hydrogen schemes will enhance the East Coast Hydrogen Network System . The programme will stimulate investment of  ~£1bn in the re-purposing and development of new hydrogen infrastructure, supporting 1000 jobs, and enabling over 5GW of publicly announced hydrogen production projects to export their hydrogen across the region to 4 million homes and 40,000 larger users of gas.

In line with the UK Government’s Hydrogen Strategy, that means that East Coast Hydrogen could deliver 25% of the targeted investment, 10% of the targeted jobs and 100% of the 5GW production target.

The 10th of October marks World Mental Health Day.

During the World Health Assembly in May 2021, governments from around the world recognised the need to scale up quality mental health services at all levels.  You can read the WHOs updated 2030 mental health action plan here – https://www.who.int/publications/i/item/9789240031029

Poor mental health doesn’t discriminate, from students to adults, it can strike at anytime and we need to ensure, as a responsible employer that we provide timely support when it is needed most.  Here at CATCH we have trained mental health first aiders, from all levels of our business plus an open-door policy to ensure we all feel comfortable to talk.

Of course, mental health isn’t just confined to the workplace, education settings, home life and relationships with family and friends can all effect our mental health.  The World health Organisation have produced a series of postcards of how you can help should someone you know, or indeed yourself, feel depressed or suicidal – click this link to access these resources- https://www.who.int/campaigns/world-mental-health-day/2021/campaign-materials.

CATCH was pleased to be the host site for a meeting of the National Infrastructure Commission on 23 September, where they launched their leveling up recommendations along with North East Lincolnshire Council.  After the meeting the Commissioners were given a tour of the CATCH site.

David Talbot, CEO of CATCH, said “these are exciting times for the Humber region, with huge scale industrial decarbonisation projects in planning, the Freeport status and offshore wind energy all supporting the future of the Energy Estuary.  Coupled with these ‘once in a generation’ opportunities has been the great work undertaken by North East Lincolnshire Council to successfully negotiate several development funding streams including the Greater Grimsby Town Deal, and today has been an opportunity to showcase the region.  I was delighted that the Commissioners were able to tour the CATCH site to see the unique capability in industry led skills on offer.”

Mark-Booth-Meet-the-team-1280x721.png

I am responsible for the day to day running of the CATCH Skills training operation, ensuring all existing and new training provision is delivered to the highest quality, exceeding customer expectations. I ensure new course material is based on the clients’ needs and formulate bespoke training plans to meet their requirements. I work closely with the Account Manager and clients to ensure that our customers are receiving a first-class service every time.

I love coming into work and every day I walk through the doors positive about what the new day will bring. We have an excellent team at CATCH, everyone supports each other to make sure we are all working to our full potential.

We are constantly striving to improve the quality of our training delivery and to widen the choice of courses we offer here at CATCH. In 10 years’ time, I hope to have played a significant part in the future development plans for CATCH and to see these realised, or retired knowing I’ve left CATCH in a better place.

If I could give myself one piece of advice 10 years ago, I would tell myself to move to CATCH sooner! Amazing people with fantastic facilities.

David-Talbot-Meet-the-team-1280x721.png

In my role I set the direction of the strategy for the business, and I make sure that we deliver upon the exciting future vision for CATCH. I support the customer on all levels, I support the member companies, wider stakeholders such as the local authorities, supply chain customers and national organisations to ensure we deliver for the industry and the Humber and Yorkshire region.

I absolutely love working with such an incredible team because it’s amazing to see such energy and enthusiasm every single day, and because of this I come into work every day with a smile on my face. It’s amazing to see the impact CATCH has on key issues within the region such as developing key industrial skills and clean growth.

Developing CATCH’s vison in 10 years it is critical we create a legacy capability from the Humber Industrial Cluster Plan activity that supports the road map to net zero industrial emissions! I also want to strengthen our industry led skills capability.

What will I be doing in 10-years’ time? I hope to be sat on a beach retired. If I could give my past self some advice, I would tell myself to research this fantastic company called CATCH, I knew nothing about CATCH 10 years ago and would have benefited greatly from doing so and taking on board the unique offer, and the truly ‘employer-led’ approach to supporting industry.

Meet Matt Robinson, HR business partner at Thornton & Ross – our newest network chair! Here he shares his thought on current challenges facing HR professionals and how being a member of the network has already benefitted their business.

Please tell us a little about yourself:
I’m Matt Robinson – HR Business Partner at Thornton & Ross. We are one of the UK’s fastest-growing, leading producers of household pharmaceutical products, and own some of the country’s most loved brands such as Covonia®, Hedrin®, Cetraben® as well as the leading disinfectant Zoflora®. I’ve been a proud member of the T&R team for the last 12 months and currently look after the central services HR team. Before T&R I spent 13 years with Asda in various roles in stores and in the home office.

What do you think are the biggest challenges facing HR professionals?
The last 18 months have been challenging for many reasons and will impact HR professionals for a long time to come. The first challenge we are already facing is flexible working, closely followed by employee turnover either through redundancy and restructures linked to the pandemic, and now as the labour market reopens and new opportunities become available. Thirdly, I see the recruitment and attraction of talent to be a big challenge in the next few years. Salary costs are likely to increase and the labour market could become a much more competitive market.

How can the group help to address these challenges?
The group is a great tool for us all to voice our opinions, share our stories, and support each other in our decision making with the aim of supporting and growing business across Yorkshire and the Humber. Already we have seen positive and constructive discussions taking place in the last 12 months that have improved employee benefits across many of our members.

How has the HR Yorkshire group benefitted your organisation so far?
We have been able to review and benchmark our current employee benefits with other businesses. Usually, this is done to gain a competitive advantage, but with the support of the other group members, we have been able to align ourselves with other great companies across Yorkshire and the Humber as well as help us think outside the box with different initiatives.

How should I get involved?

Vivergo-web-pic.png

In August, CATCH Skills delivered a full week of training using a combination of ready to deliver courses and bespoke scenario based training at the National Centre for Process Manufacturing – the UK’s Leading Fully-Operational Tank Farm and Process Plant Training Facility. (NCPM)

The Vivergo Fuels plant will begin to manufacture E10 petrol from January 2022 and therefore requires a new highly competent workforce. By using CATCH skills to train their new recruits, learners benefitted from a combined learning experience – a practical hands-one experience, risk free at the NCPM plus onsite learning at their premises in Saltend Chemicals Park.

Mark, supervisor, Vivergo Fuels said “CATCH has fantastic training facilities, with a realistic feel of a working plant”. Steve, supervisor, Vivergo Fuels contributed “Superb tailor-made training, all within one site. A must for training, for both experienced and new operators”.

Holly Goodwin, Account Manager, CATCH skills added “The whole week was a huge success all round! It was fantastic to see Vivergo’s newest employees gain vital, hands-on experience using our National Centre of Process Manufacturing (NCPM). This leaves them in a great position when they restart their plant in January 2022.  For most delegates, this was their first time working with their new team, this created a brilliant team building and networking opportunity.

The feedback we received from Vivergo was that it was a brilliant week.  Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their time at CATCH, especially the scenarios created using the NCPM.  It was great that we could replicate Vivergo’s procedures and use their documentation to give their new employees a realistic overview of their operations.  We are currently in discussions with Vivergo to plan for them to return to CATCH in the near future to support them further using the NCPM.”

To find out how CATCH skills can upskill your workforce, contact Daisy Seddon – daisy.seddon@catchuk.org or call 01469 552828.  You can also visit our website – www.catchuk.org

The NCPM is delivered in partnership with Reynolds Training Services. You can find out more by visiting our dedicated website www.ncpm.uk.
