BEIS is providing up to £18m of competitive grant funding to support the uptake of industrial heat recovery projects.

The department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) is providing up to £18m of grant funding through a competitive process to support the uptake of industrial heat recovery projects.
BEIS has developed the Industrial Heat Recovery Support (IHRS) Programme to further understand the identified challenges and barriers to adoption and to increase industrial confidence in deploying heat recovery technologies by working with industry to address these barriers.
The IHRS Programme is a competitive grant funding programme in 2 phases, which aims to:

  • increase industry confidence to invest in technologies to recover heat from industrial processes
  • increase the deployment of such technologies in England and Wales

Industrial heat recovery is a process by which heat generated in or for an industrial process that otherwise would be wasted is recovered and used.  This waste heat can be used in a number of ways, including within the same facility for heat or cooling, by another end user (e.g. via a new or existing heat network), or by converting the waste heat to power.  Heat from all waste streams (solid, liquid and gas) are included in this definition.
Industrial heat recovery has the potential to realise significant energy bill and carbon savings for industry through a reduction in primary fuel use.  It therefore contributes to the government’s aims of achieving a low cost, clean and secure energy system and can also provide competitiveness and productivity gains, giving it strong links with the Industrial Strategy.
A study by Element Energy found that 11 TWh/year of industrial heat used in 2014 could have been technically recovered from industrial processes in eight key energy intensive sectors, but that only 5 TWh/year of this would have been commercially viable.  This illustrates that the deployment of industrial heat recovery is falling well short of its potential at present.  This is due to a number of technical barriers including insufficient knowledge and information, complexity of fitting heat recovery technologies to certain industrial processes and commercial barriers regarding the payback of investments and availability of capital.
Eligible proposals that are well aligned with the aims and objectives of the IHRS Programme will be able to apply for grants to partially fund the proposed project from concept through to delivery.

nacelle-4-640x427-1.jpg

CATCH was really pleased to take delivery of a Nacelle from Siemens Gamesa at the end of October.  Transporting the 80 ton piece of equipment from Siemens in Hull to CATCH was a huge logistical task that was overseen throughout by Iain Ritchie from Ritchie Services.
The nacelle provides a whole new dimension in developing the offshore wind training offer for the region and fits in with the CATCH model of using real life equipment and plant to support skills and competency development.
We would like to thank the Siemens Gamesa Training Centre in Hull for the very kind donation.  The plan now is to protect the equipment from the elements and to work with our partners North Lindsey College to turn it into a first class training aid for mechanical and electrical training.
David Talbot, CEO of CATCH said ‘CATCH is very grateful to Siemens Gamesa for the donation of this great training aid.  We can see a wide variety of uses for the nacelle and will be working with our partner, North Lindsey College, and other stakeholders to develop the equipment to its true potential.  CATCH is a non-profit skills development organisation that is led by industry and relies on donations such as this nacelle to ensure that we can continue to provide relevant, up-to-date, contextualised training that is demanded by industry.’

New Skills and Competency Group launched to support process manufacturing companies in the Yorkshire region and beyond.
The new group – which is part of YCF & CATCH – a manufacturing membership organisation based in Stallingbourgh – held its first meeting at Nufarm, Wkye with representatives from member companies throughout the process industries.
The Skills and Competency group was launched last week as a direct response from members for a manufacturer only network in Yorkshire – that builds on the already established group in the Humber – with the remit of best practice sharing, collaborative learning and resources plus competency of the workforce.
With technical roles becoming more difficult to recruit, younger staff difficult to retain and an ageing workforce causing companies to review long term plans, this group will provide peer to peer advice and support to tackle these challenges together.
Steve Foster, MD at Vickers, who attended the launch said “This industry led group is incredibly valuable – to have a platform where we can discuss our processes and procedures, and then listen to how other similar companies approach recruitment, learning and development, enables us to fine tune what we are doing for our most valuable assets –  our employees”
James McIntosh, head of CATCH skills said, “Skills challenges are common across many of our manufacturer member companies, it makes perfect sense to bring like minded individuals together to share the responsibility of educating their workforce, whilst having a group voice to make access to training and experts more accessible for all”
“We discuss best practice across the full spectrum of learning and development from apprentices and graduates to training the MD, which all contributes to a well-trained and well-functioning workforce, which in turn reduces down-time, quality issues and improves staff retention”.
The meeting which is facilitated by James McIntosh at CATCH and Lisa Buck from YCF, aims to meet bi-monthly and will be held at a member manufacturing facility to further knowledge exchange. For information on how to get involved, you can contact Lisa at lisa@ycf.org.uk or lisa.buck@catchuk.org
