CATCH chairman, Brendan Conlan, has recently called for recognition for engineering in the area, noticing how employment of apprentices in the industry has fallen over the last few decades. His comments, which were featured in the Scunthorpe Telegraph, highlighted how “there are good quality young people out there who can do what we need if we give them the chance”.

Identifying an industry need in the area, the article urges young people to follow the apprenticeship route to keep local employment rates high.

Through the exciting new North Lindsey College and CATCH Skills partnership, February sees the launch of 2 Leadership & Management qualifications on site. Accredited by the CMI, both the Level 3 Team Leader/Supervisor Diploma and the Level 5 Operations/Departmental Manager programmes will be offered as Apprenticeships for employers to access. The pathways are suitable for all levels of experience, from existing managers with significant management responsibilities, to supervisors and junior managers. They are aimed to improve the productivity, efficiency and management of key resources within companies by offering an accredited qualification to upskill the workforce.

The programmes are available for as little as £500 per person and employers who are paying the apprenticeship levy can use levy funds to pay for the training. The courses are delivered through blended learning with a requirement to come on site to CATCH roughly 3 days per quarter. Head of CATCH Skills James McIntosh said “ The launch of these programmes comes at a good time for local industry who have been effected by the apprenticeship levy and already recruit young apprentices in several areas across their businesses. This has left employers with a large pot of levy funds in their account with no routes to market to train people. These pathways provide a solution to upskill existing members of staff in the vital areas of Leadership & Management. The levy should be seen as an opportunity for employers to invest in their workforce and gain them valuable qualifications that can aid their personal development. Even for non-levy paying employers, the L3 and L5 Management qualifications would normally be a much higher cost so the apprenticeship route allows the smaller companies to access the same qualifications at a much more reasonable price.  I am looking forward to working with North Lindsey College to further develop these and other pathways led by our employers demand to meet their training needs.”
