CATCH Skills recently delivered a week long programme for the University of Leeds which gave 200 of their Chemical Engineering degree students the opportunity to bring their theoretical studies at the University into the real working world. The programme was developed for 2nd Year Chemical Engineering students to give them a greater awareness of process industry.
Each student attended for 1 day and had 4 practical sessions covering;
• Laser Alignment
• Mechanical Joint Integrity
• Pumps
• DSC control room simulation
• Process operations and plant introduction
The week was extremely successful with the students feedback being they loved the fact they could relate the CATCH environment to what they had studied and enhance it through practical activities. Many of the students had learnt about pumps, valves, process systems and control, but never seen them in operation or as part of a working plant before.
Head of CATCH Skills James McIntosh said “ The whole week was fantastic and it was great to see how the students responded to our real life industry environment. The lecturers were very impressed with how effective the course was and we put a lot of work into the planning and organisation to ensure it fed into the curriculum the students had covered. We are in discussions with Leeds over next years project already. Credit must go the students who came ready to learn and were enthusiastic throughout, despite the treacherous weather conditions. Even the Beast from the East couldn’t stop them from going out on the plant in heavy snowfall and high winds!”
